An evening in the vineyard | 22nd February 2018

‘An evening in the vineyard’

The second of our monthly wine tasting events in collaboration with some of Italy’s most renowned producers

Paolo Balgera, representing Cantine Balgera, will be introducing his wines and answering all your questions.
Since Roman times Valtellina has been a land of vineyards and wine; the rugged terrain, which is one of the most challenging viticulture in the world, has helped to keep Valtellina’s wines a secret among wine enthusiasts. If you were to walk across the valley you would be stunned by the extraordinary system of terracing covering over 2500 km, built along the valley contours with drystone walls that make vine cultivation possible in the best and sunniest areas of the Rhaetian Alps. As testament to the uniqueness of the architectural feat, UNESCO has agreed to consider the area in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The red wines made in this area are produced using Nebbiolo grapes; it is a fine late-maturing vine that has developed over the centuries a perfect harmony with the soil, leading to unique wines such as the Valtellina Sforzato or Sfursat, whose name comes from the traditional practice, unchanged since ancient times, of drying the grapes.
